Monorail red train runs again after $2.5M repair Reprinted from the Daily Journal of Commerce, December 17, 2004The Seattle Center Monorail started running again yesterday, after crews repaired damage caused by a fire on May 31, which put the line out of service. Cost for the repairs was $2.5 million.
The monorail’s electrical and grounding systems were redesigned, and passenger seats were replaced with seats that meet fire code.
Only the red train will be in service initially. The blue train will be running in the spring.
Downtown Seattle Association President Kate Joncas said, "We didn’t feel whole when we were not connected to Seattle Center. We just weren’t Seattle without the monorail running." "An icon of Seattle was lost," said Mayor Greg Nickels. "We enjoyed it so much, we’re going to replace it with a 21st century system that’s going to connect our city in a larger sense." He was referring to the 14-mile Green Line, due to begin construction next year and be finished in summer 2009.
